From Karalyn Church
Partick Beat
I have been elected to join the committee at the St Vincents
Deaf Club - which is currently without a building due to an
arson attack last year...which has meant that their building
is going through demolition at the moment. We are trying to
raise money in order to build a new club for many members
of the deaf community in Glasgow. At the moment many members
of the community feel quite lost without a club, as this was
the main place that they could meet with other deaf people,
and communicate in their own language - sign language, and
find out information from each other about what is going on
in their lives, and in the community and the wider world.
If you imagine that as a hearing person it is very easy with
you to ineract with your neighbours, with the local shopkeeper,
with other people in bars etc. Well it isn't that easy for
a deaf person as quite often people are afraid of striking
up conversations with them in their home areas as they are
afraid they will not know what they are saying, or not know
how to talk to them. Usually their week is spent closed off
from the world, without opportunity to communicate outside
their immediate family. A deaf club gives them the space to
do this, to meet other people that use their language.
The deaf club is a social space to meet and have fun, as well
as an informational base with various groups being run - deaf
womens group, where they have talks on cancer issues, pregnancy,
abusive relationships etc, OAP groups, discussion forums on
DDA,sports groups that compete nationally and internationally, campaign
groups to challenge the discrimination they face daily, deaf
tutors teach sign language classes to hearing people from
the centre...and many more groups which could take me a day
to discuss.
So now the community has come together - holding meetings
now and again in various hired halls, to raise money to build
a much needed new centre.
As part of this I will be doing an abseil off the Marriott
Hotel in Glasgow on Sept 12th...and am looking for sponsors...any
amount that people can afford will be much appreciated...its
all going to a very good cause here in Glasgow.

What a fantastic
site. I'm hopefully moving up to Glasgow soon. Feeling a little
daunted and all that but it's excellent to know that there's
drumming to be had. I'll have to bring Djembe. Hopefully meet
you all soon!!
